Lord Mortis is not a religious figure, but a spiritual force. His essence is magical rather than earthly; he is a composite of the blinding white light of wisdom and an unfathomably dark spirituality.

Those who would consider Lord Mortis an evil being fear anything which transcends their narrow sphere of knowledge. Lord Mortis is a crusader. He is a seeker of truth. Early in his quest, Lord Mortis came to realize that the efforts of the so-called benevolent Pantheon and their industrious Titans to shape and order the erratic newborn universe was a vain effort. Lord Mortis understood that only out of chaos could enlightenment unfold of its own accord. Enlightenment cannot be accomplished through a regimen of controlled effort, but only through an epiphany of transcendant awakening. To achieve enlightenment, he now saw, one must closely observe the seemingly random occurences throughout the cosmos and intellectually and spiritually work out their underlying meaning then become one with it. This truth was what the Pantheon failed to comprehend.

The magical energy which imbues his eminence Lord Mortis is the same essence out of which the cosmos, the Pantheon, and Sargeras himself were formed. Their formation, Lord Mortis came to see, was the direct result of an unknown energy and consciousness which existed everywhere. This consciousness Lord Mortis called Mortu, a being he considered to be his direct progenitor.

Their feeble minds clouded by their zeal to control and manipulate the cosmos, the Pantheon could not comprehend the insights Lord Mortis shared with them. He was exiled from their structured dimension and relegated to roam randomly throughout the universe. Chance was his rudder on an endless sea. His fortune a pleasant mystery....
